A lot of things
Living between Los Angeles, the Philippines & Costa Rica, Sofia is a multicultural mixed-media artist and creative technologist with an emphasis on narrative design, XR tech, machine intelligence and blockchain. Her intersectional identity and interdisciplinary background cultivated her interest in grey areas (all things ‘in-between’).
Having grown up a part of multiple cultures and idiosyncratic perspectives required her to develop a sense of wonder, empathy and openness that has grown to be instrumental in her view of the world. She often probes truths surrounding existential concepts that challenge the notion of the self & individuality, reality & beyond through philosophical inquiry and metaphysical, esoteric and speculative creations.
Some of her projects include “Bigas” an ethnographic exploration through sonic live performance, “Baluti” an imagining of armor grounded in pre-colonial beliefs through generative still image, The “Three Orchid Problem” a reflection on the intricacies of womanhood and the multi-faceted nature of individuality, brand identity projects for “Solar Valley” and “Iridium Holdings”, “Dendrobium” a series of collaborative creations on speculative “empathetic environments” with machine intelligence and a translation to physical architectural models, and narrative & game design for “Where You Stand” an augmented reality experience reviving history for future generations to experience immersively.
She is graduating with a B.A. in Media Arts & Practice-- a progressive, avant-garde program that educates at the intersection of critical theory and creative technological application at the School of Cinematic Arts in the University of Southern California.
